It’s not just the 53-man roster that Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has to rebuild this offseason. His coaching staff has taken several hits, as well, with the latest being the defection of defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley to the University of Tennessee. Ansley reportedly has been hired by the Volunteers to be their co-defensive
Other programs know when they have up and coming coaches.
Tennessee’s HC was with Ansley at Bama.
No shock here, but it sucks for us.
I have to wonder how bad our DBs would have played last season if Ansley was not here.
Hate to see him go, really thought he put his stamp on the secondary last year. He turned down a collegiate d coordinator job to join us last year, didn’t he Steve? That being the case I’m surprised he’s leaving so soon.
On the other hand, I don’t remember the last time our staff got raided, we’ve lost two coaches to promotions this offseason after a 4-12 campaign. Say what you will but Gruden has always had a good eye for assistants.
@MadStork – yes, he turned down the D-coordinator job at Colorado State after Gruden offered Ansley the DB coaching position. In matter of fact, his wife had found a house and started to preparing the move to Colorado. He called her to have the moving vans keep heading west to the Bay Area. Some of the boosters at CSU were unhappy with Gruden taking the new coach away last year.
Thanks David, I thought something like that happened..
Charles Woodson is no longer at ESPN. What about him coaching the secondary?
Can’t imagine Charles wanting to throttle back on his winery, fatherhood, traveling, etc., to spend 20 hours a day during the season on Gruden’s insane schedule. That’s not Charles. He likes his time, put it that way.
He tweeted in response to a similar musing about the timing of the need for a CB coach and his leaving ESPN as “purely a coincidence” or something like that. So, I think it unlikely that CWood will be the next CB coach.
When will Tom Cable leave or get fired? He is still my least favorite Gruden hire and coach on the staff.
